Exposed metal is something we see more and more of in modern architecture. Restaurants, offices, retail, and breweries such as the Russian River Brewery in Windsor, CA (shown here) use steel to give an open and striking aesthetic.
Industrial-Chic (also referred to as Urban Industrial) used to be seen in only factories, lofts, and the like, but today, many architects and designers are using steel beams and panels to create a masculine and open feel, while offsetting with warmer, more traditional designs to create a contemporary look.
This trend is appearing in both urban and rural settings alike and combines items and textures such as aged woods, glass, galvanized metal, and raw materials to create a simple, clean, and geometric look.
The use of repurposed or salvaged items in this trend makes it a huge hit for those interested in green design and vintage appeal.
Some common elements typically paired with steel are:
- Cement floors
- Raw, unfinished materials
- Sleek, metal, and glass lighting
- Exposed brick walls
- Stainless steel accents
Some designers incorporate a charitable element to this trend by seeking out materials at Habitat for Humanity Restores and other places where salvaged items like mantels and doors can be found.
